Last Thursday 3 March was an exciting day for the Silage Advisory Centre. We had the opportunity to participate in the first ever Haylage for Horses event, organized by the British Grassland Society (BGS).  The event was hosted by Vale View Equestrian in Old Dalby, Leicestershire.

The “Making Haylage for Horses” workshop - sponsored by the Silage Advisory Centre, Ecosyl and Oliver Seeds – featured one of Europe’s leading haylage specialist, Dr Cecilia Mueller from the Swedish University of Agricultural Science and attracted close to 50 participants, mainly farmers and contractors who make (or are considering making) haylage for the equine sector and advisers.

As part of the day, the Silage Advisory Centre organized a bale wrapping demonstration that offered participants tips on best bale wrapping practice. Specific focus was given on applying the wrap correctly and on the number of layers, especially important when it comes to haylage. The demonstation was run jointly by experts from bpi.agri and Kuhn Farm Machinery and silage expert Dave Davies.

Expert advice and tips on producing good quality haylage for horses can be found on two fact sheets that we developed specifically for this occasion and which can be downloaded here.
