AUGUST 30, 2011– With an improved library of advisory resources, new informative videos with insights from industry experts and a new “Ask the experts” feature, The Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC) has revived its website with features to offer farmers easy access to a wealth of information to help them in their everyday decision-making on silage production. Visitors will find timely advice on topics ranging from grassland management through to feeding techniques for quality silage production. The website and insights on how to use the new features will be shown at this year’s Dairy Event & Livestock show at SilAC’s stand, No. 394 in the Feeds & Forage zone.

Management strategies to improve productivity and reduce costs have never been more important than today, especially in the livestock sector where price fluctuation is pushing farmers to improve profitability by addressing and reducing their input costs. Recent research shows that Red Clover as a silage crop offers significant advantages in terms of input reduction and increased nutritional values.

On many farms first cut silage is made mid-late June or sometimes even early July, and experts at the Silage Advisory Centre believe there is no reason why such a late first cut should not be of equally high quality in terms of energy, protein and fermentation as many of those silages produced on farms in the first weeks of May.

Weather experts are warning farmers that they could be facing an exceptionally hot and dry summer, possibly as bad as 1976 with respect to amounts of rainfall. In certain parts of the UK shortages of grass for conservation are already becoming an issue.  If the predictions are correct this is likely to become more severe and more wide-spread across the UK. Whilst there is nothing any of us can do to increase rainfall, experts at the Silage Advisory Centre point to a few things farmers should consider during silage harvesting to reduce losses and thus forage shortages over the coming summer and winter months.

This coming winter the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), Aberystwyth University will be conducting a farm survey throughout the UK to evaluate how different on-farm management techniques affect baled silage quality. The research, funded by the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC), will assist in highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of certain management practices carried out on farms in baled silage production systems.

Last year there were severe shortages of winter forage due to poor grass growth in the spring and summer of 2010 leaving many farmers facing increased costs for bought-in feed.  If the current dry spell continues this spring a similar prospect may be in store this coming autumn/winter – but experts at the Silage Advisory Centre believe that the impact could be significantly reduced by better control of dry matter losses between harvests and feed out.

Last Thursday 3 March was an exciting day for the Silage Advisory Centre. We had the opportunity to participate in the first ever Haylage for Horses event, organized by the British Grassland Society (BGS).  The event was hosted by Vale View Equestrian in Old Dalby, Leicestershire.

The Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC) was present at one of the UK major event for the dairy industry. The Dairy Event & Livestock Show took place at The NEC in Birmingham this year on September 7-8. As well as sponsoring two sessions of the Feed Science Forums, SilAC encouraged visitors on its stand to take part in a prize draw that we organised. Participants of the competition had the opportunity to win great prizes.

A new series of Feed Science Forums designed to offer practical science based advice to all farmers as well as consultants and feed advisors will be held at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show. SilAC is sponsoring the following two sessions:

Taking three simple steps after making first cut silage could help farmers reap significant second cut silage rewards, according to the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC).

24-06-2010

Farmers are facing grass shortages with first cut silage yields being potentially low due to the slow spring and a low second cut due to the dry summer. With this in mind, the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC) is urging farmers to consider digestibility and wilting rates in an effort to make the best of a tough season.

We are pleased to announce the lucky winners of the prize draws organised by the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC) at the ScotGrass and Balmoral shows.

Participants of the competition had the opportunity to win reels of silage balewrap and grassland health checks.

A study into a ‘smash and grab’ approach to silage making has been announced by the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC).

The research – to be carried out by The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), a founder member of SilAC - will investigate the risks and benefits of harvesting silage during a one day rain-free window as opposed to waiting until weather conditions improve, the so-called ‘smash and grab’ approach.

Kuhn Farm Machinery (UK) Limited, a leading supplier of machinery for hay and silage making, baling and wrapping, has joined the Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC), the recently established advisory body designed to aid farmers’ decision-making on baled silage production, forage and grassland management.

21-04-2010

The Silage Advisory Centre (SilAC) is calling on farmers to review the one-size-fits-all approach to harvesting – and consider making more use of baled silage and staggered field closures to support optimum digestibility.

Silage and forage conservation advice on offer at Scotgrass and Balmoral Shows

With rising production costs and increasingly unpredictable weather conditions putting pressure on livestock farmers, the Silage Advisory Centre invites farmers to meet experts at this year’s Scotgrass and Balmoral Shows to investigate options for maximising forage and grassland systems to facilitate cost reduction and the production of quality and nutritional silage at a reasonable profit.

New research has revealed a range of benefits from using red clover as an alternative silage crop to grass, including cost and productivity gains. Investigations into red clover silage have been carried out over recent years by The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) - a member of the new Silage Advisory Centre created to promote the benefits of baled silage as a modern grassland and forage management tool.

Industry experts in UK and Ireland have teamed up to develop a new "Silage Advisory Centre" designed to help farmers respond to the challenges of modern agriculture and support decision-making in silage production, forage and grassland management.

Internationally recognised rural sciences research centre is urging farmers to be more flexible in their approach to forage as unpredictable weather conditions continue to play havoc with traditional farming methods.
